It’s a game, but for some of the Packers players, it’s also a test. The team recently introduced a new challenge in its locker room, one that many might see as an excuse to leave early on the first day back from vacation. But for several guys who have a vested interest in staying sharp come the regular season, this little word game is no joke.
The word game is called ‘Byrdle’ (pronounced Burr-dle), and it runs like this: Each player has up to seven tries to correctly spell any given word. For each miss, they then have another opportunity to get it right before moving on to the next word in the challenge. If you get them all right on your first try — Congrats! You are now officially smarter than five members of the Green Bay Packers.
When you’re playing Byrdle, everyone is a speller. The goal of the game is to spell words and remain in the game by spelling words without getting eliminated.
Here’s how it works: Players take turns reading out a word from the word list and trying to spell it. The first person to spell the word loses a turn and goes back to seven tries.
The number of tries before players go back to the drawing board can vary depending on the number of people playing. For example, if you have only two players, they go back three times before they lose a turn. If you have four players, they go back five times before they lose again. It all depends on how many players are in the game — and their ability as spellers!
