The following service is being issued to respond to the current humanitarian crisis in the African country of Somalia. A primary goal of the United Nations is to seek peace, prosperity, and international cooperation amongst nations. The organization was formed after World War II to promote these ideals with the stated mission of “promoting international co-operation for the peaceful resolution of disputes, securing justice for those who are defrauded or wronged, and assisting those in need” (UN Charter). The Somali people have faced hardship in recent years due to drought and conflict with neighboring countries. The number of refugees has skyrocketed as a result, from just over 500,000 in 1991 to more than 5 million today. It is estimated that around 20% of Somalia’s population lives below the poverty line and less than 1% of its citizens have access to clean water (United Nations Development Program). This makes it an even more appealing target for potential foreign intervention. To help combat this situation, we are issuing a call for volunteers to serve in Somalia as part of Operation Uphold the Peace (OUTP).
